Transforming Poultry Farming
The Poultry Welfare and Sustainable Systems (POWELS) Program, established by One Health and Development Initiative (OHDI), is transforming poultry farming across Africa, by promoting humane, sustainable, and resilient poultry systems that safeguard animal welfare, ensure food safety, protect ecosystems, and enhance farmer livelihoods.
Across many African countries, poultry farming faces major challenges, from poor welfare of birds to biosecurity risks, food safety concerns, and the growing impacts of climate change. Farmers struggle with high mortality, low productivity, and limited access to knowledge, finance, and fair markets. Weak policy support, low consumer awareness, and unsustainable practices further threaten animal well-being, food quality, livelihoods, and environmental resilience.
Therefore, through farmer training, technical support, research, policy engagement, market access facilitation, and advocacy, POWELS empowers value chain stakeholders with the knowledge, tools, and partnerships needed to adopt and scale welfare-aligned, climate-smart, and economically viable poultry production practices.
